Music technology inspected: good teaching in Key Stage 3 music. Appendix Website: The National Association of Music Educators is very pleased to place some important material relating to music technology on this part of its website. It consists of an appendix to an article written by Janet Mills HMI and Andy Murray, that was published in July 2000. It has been produced as a result of thorough investigation and provides an invaluable range of models of teachers' experiences in the use of music technology in the classroom. |

Background Information:
During 1997-98 OFSTED carried out a survey of the effective use of ICT to promote musical learning during class music lessons at Key Stage 3 (i.e. for pupils aged 11-14). Fifty-two schools, located in 45 Local Education Authorities in England, received a one-day visit from one inspector, or very occasionally two inspectors. Inspectors observed a total of 106 Key Stage 3 music lessons where the teaching was good and supported by ICT. A full report of the findings, which includes descriptions of some of the effective lessons seen, may be found in: The British Journal of Music Education is published by Cambridge University Press, and may also be read in many university libraries. See also Cambridge Journals Online: www.journals.cup.org A shorter report of the findings was published in the May 2000 issue of Music Teacher: Music Teacher is published by Rhinegold Publishing (020 7333 1747) This site extends these publications by providing further information about the use of music technology in a small number of the schools where effective teaching was observed. It is an initial stage in providing this extension. We hope that the appearance of the site will encourage other schools, including others of the schools where inspectors observed effective teaching, to submit materials and share their practice. Please email NAME if you are interested in contributing material to this area. |
