Yorks & North Midlands Conference Report
On Saturday 4th February sixty delegates attended a joint conference presented jointly by NAME, Schools Music Association (East Midlands) and the Yorkshire Association for Music and Special Educational Needs. The title of the conference was Music for All and a range of practical workshops were offered to the enthusiastic delegates as the photos show! The workshops covered the areas of special education and Key Stages 1-3. The inspiring keynote speaker was Em Whitfield, who took us all through a number of vocal games/ warm-ups and harmonious part-singing. Other equally fascinating workshops by Sue Nicholls featured the colourful headgear as shown as an alternative starting point for composition. Pam Ayling (Sheffield) demonstrated many different forms of software for special needs education, and Victoria Jacquiss presented a very popular steel pans workshop. Diane Paterson from YAMSEN demonstrated links between healthy eating programmes and music.
The delegates were generous with their praise, and admitted to having far more fun than they had ever expected for a CPD day ! Bishop Grosseteste College kindly hosted the day in their new state-of –the art block, and especial thanks go to Sue Nicholls for on-site organisation. Thanks too go to Diane Paterson who also organised the event with Sue and myself.
The conference was an extremely successful collaboration of the three organisations for music education, and a superb day of music for all present!
